Upon the nomination by UNESCO of Beirut as World Book Capital for 2009, the Ministry
of Culture adopted a partnership approach, seeking as many partners as possible
: ministries, embassies, NGOs, cultural institutions, intellectuals, etc. Its purpose
is to create a true cultural dynamic at the entire national level.
READY TO READ (Listos Para Leer : Diseno de Libros en Espana) is an exhibition of some 400 books designed and published in Spain between 2000 and 2006. Conceived as an X-ray of the state of book design in Spain today, the exhibition includes books of literature and essays, books on art, architecture and design, children’s books and artists’ books from different eras; it highlights both the conventional and the avant-garde talents of designers in modern Spanish publishing. What is more interesting is that the selected books are not special books; they are generally books that anyone can find in most bookshops in Spain.

In the framework of Beirut World Book Capital and in collaboration with the Minister of Culture “Salim Wardé” a book fair entitled « Writings by women and about women» will start on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 8, 9 and 10th of March, at the UNESCO palace, Beirut.
The Minister of Culture Salim Wardeh distributed diplomas to directors of publishing houses who completed a training session organized by “Akademie des Deutschen Buchhandels”, during a celebration attended by the president of the Publishers Union in Lebanon Mrs. Samira Assi, the president of the “Goethe-Institute” Mr. Farid Majari and a number of directors from Lebanese publishing houses at the Holiday Inn hotel.
Bibliotheca Islamica, or the Islamic Library, is the well-known series of the Orient-Institut Beirut which is devoted to the edition of classical Arabic texts. The series covers pre-modern works in the fields of Islamic theology and Arabic language and literature, as well as history.
This event is organized in the context of Beirut world book capital2009 by the European cultural institutes of Beirut, in collaboration with the Metropolis association. The goal of this event (from January11 to 17 at Metropolis cinema, Sofil Center, Ashrafieh) is to prove that cinema and literature can and know how to understand and stimulate each other.

Within the framework of “Beirut World Book Capital” and incollaboration with the Ministry of Culture the project “Publiclibraries open their doors for people with special needs” has beenlaunched by the ” Foundation of Al Hadi for hearing and visualdisorders for language and communication” on Wednesday October 14 atthe Library of Al Sayyed Hussein Fadlallah – Haret Hurek.

The exhibition will take place in Rene Moawad’s garden (Sanayeh) from August 11 to 21, 2009 everyday from 7am to 7pm.
This exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Lebanese Ministry of Culture during the cultural events of Beirut World Capital 2009.
